Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Viewbank lawn

  • A block that falls toward either valley, and any terraces on the way down, change the cut; the direction of the fall is the thing to give.
  • Backing onto Banyule Flats or the parklands? Mention whether the back boundary is fenced and what comes over it.
  • Weekly FOGO means the bin option always works; pick it unless you would rather have the clippings mulched back in.

Viewbank lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Viewbank?+

Our model gives a 180 m² Viewbank lawn $105-$150. A block that falls toward the Plenty or the Banyule flats adds trimmer time along the low fence, and the bids show it.

Is the nature strip mine to mow in Viewbank?+

Yes. Neat and tidy is what Banyule asks of the strip in front of a house, and its crews mow hazards only. Tick the strip as well and the same visit takes care of it.

Does a Viewbank lawn near the river flats hold water?+

The suburb is high ground at 66 m beside the Yarra and Plenty valleys, and how a given lawn drains is another matter. What yours does after a wet week belongs on the listing; a soft lawn is cut later, or with less weight on it.

About Viewbank

Edward Willis settled here in 1837 and Williamson built a weatherboard homestead two years later. Dr Robert Martin bought the 78 ha in 1842 and in 1850 put up a twelve-room brick house designed by John Gill, pulled down about 1923; its ruins are heritage-listed and were dug over between 1996 and 1999. Martin also bought Joseph Hawdon's gothic Banyule homestead on Buckingham Drive in 1867. The Bartram family ran Viewbank as a dairy farm from 1922 to 1974, and their stock-feed silos still stand in Banyule Road. The Melbourne Hunt Club rode here in the late nineteenth century.

Housing went in mainly through the 1960s, when the directories still showed the place as Lower Plenty. A post office opened on 1 October 1962, Banyule primary in 1960, Viewbank primary in 1966 with six staff and 97 pupils, and Rosanna East high in 1971. Cows were still milked on part of the ground until 1974. The Yarra and the Yarra Valley Parklands bound the suburb on one side, the Plenty River lies to the east and Lower Plenty Road to the north. Banyule Flats Reserve, over 46 acres, is called the largest grassy woodland in inner Melbourne, and Castleton Park, Price Park, Viewbank Reserve and the Rosanna Golf Club are the other open ground.

Banyule wants the strip kept neat and tidy by whoever lives there and sends its own mowers out for hazards alone. The green bin takes food with the garden waste and is emptied every week under the collection that started on 4 July 2022. On a block that falls toward one of the two valleys, the trimming along the low fence is where the time goes.
