About Lower Plenty
Grazing country from the 1840s. Sigismund Wekey bought 211 acres in 1855 hoping for vineyards and pushed for the Templestowe bridge over the Yarra the same year. A school ran from 1874 to 1876 and the post office opened around 1902. After the Second World War it was still a residential, dairying and pastoral district, its growth held back by the distance from the Eltham railway. Population was 255 in 1933, 456 in 1947 and 3,782 in 2011.
The suburb sits at the junction of the Plenty on the west and the Yarra on the south, with Fitzsimons Lane east and Main Road north. Inside the 6.9 square kilometres are the Yarra Valley Parklands, the Main Yarra and Plenty River trails, and the Heidelberg and Rosanna golf courses.
Lower Plenty is City of Banyule. Residents keep the nature strip in front neat and mown; the council cuts a strip only when it has become a hazard. The FOGO bin goes out weekly and takes garden waste along with food, and has done since 4 July 2022. For the lawn itself, the mower relies on what you tell them about the soil and the slope.
