About Ascot Vale
Ascot House was built in 1860. The showgrounds site was acquired in 1883 and the primary school opened in 1885; four churches went up between 1885 and 1889 while the Union Road shops were built from 1886 to 1890. The post office opened as Ascot Vale West on 1 January 1888 and dropped the West around 1893. John Wren took over the Ascot racecourse in 1905. Trams ran along Maribyrnong Road from 1906. The Mercy Convent of 1909 was followed by a Catholic church in 1912 and its school the next year, then Ascot Vale West primary in 1916 and two theatres in 1924-25.
The Maribyrnong River is the western boundary and Moonee Ponds Creek the eastern; Maribyrnong and Ormond Roads close the north, Lyons and Epsom Roads the south. The Melbourne Showgrounds sit beside Flemington Racecourse. There are flood-prone areas on the Maribyrnong alluvium, beside the river. Temperance Town sits between Union, Maribyrnong and Epsom Roads. Ascot Vale is Moonee Valley City Council. The local law puts the whole property, nature strip included, under a 200 mm limit for grass and weeds, and officers go round before summer; council can clear a strip and recover its costs.
