About Moonee Ponds
Pastoral settlement began in the early 1840s, and the Moonee Ponds Farmers Society of 1848 grew into the Royal Agricultural Society. Mount Alexander Road carried the goldfields traffic. The station closed from 1864 to 1871 before reopening on a government line. The Essendon town hall and Moonee Valley Racecourse both date from 1882, the boom's first year here, Puckle Street's shops from the 1890s, Moonee Ponds West primary from 1888, and Queens Park was laid out in 1897 on ground planted since the 1880s. Trams ran up Mount Alexander Road from 1906, a second primary opened near the racecourse in 1919 and the district hospital in 1980.
Moonee Ponds Creek and the Maribyrnong River bound the suburb, with the two trails along them and Aberfeldie and Ormond parks adjoining. The name goes back to Hoddle's 'Mone Mone Creek' of 1837, a chain of ponds in dry seasons. Queens Park's planting started in the 1880s, a decade before the park itself was formally laid out.
