Lawn mowing in Airport West

Most of Airport West was two farms, Spring Park and Niddrie, until the subdivisions of the 1950s and 60s. The aviation businesses along Matthews Avenue petitioned for the name in the late 1950s, and it is the only locality in Australia with Airport in its name and no airport inside it.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Airport West lawn

  • The strip counts toward the 200 mm rule, so add it to the job; the mower does both in the one visit.
  • Blocks on the Steele Creek park have a back fence that is either solid or open to the reserve, and an open one is edged along the park side.
  • A fortnightly green bin fills fast in October. Pick clippings taken away if yours is already full.

Airport West lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Airport West?+

The model's figure for 180 m² of Airport West lawn comes to $100-$145 for one cut. A 1950s block with grass front and back can measure above that, and the bid is priced off the aerial reading of your own lot.

How long can the grass get on an Airport West nature strip?+

Under 200 mm, measured from ground level. Moonee Valley applies that to the whole property, strip included, and inspects before summer; a strip that has got away can be cleared by the council with the cost recovered from the owner. The street tree on it is council's to prune, not yours.

Does the creek park change how my lawn is mown?+

Only if it meets your fence. A rear boundary open to the Steele Creek linear park needs edging along the reserve side and a mower who checks what has blown in. Say in the listing which way the back of the block faces.

About Airport West

Residential settlement began in the mid-1950s along the tramline on the eastern boundary, route 59, which runs from Westfield Airport West down Matthews Avenue and Keilor Road to the city. Parklands primary opened in 1958 and closed in 1993. The post office opened in 1960 as Niddrie North inside the McNamara Avenue shopping centre of about 30 shops, and the Niddrie primary and high schools opened on the southern boundary in 1961. The shoppingtown came in 1976 and was redeveloped in 1982 and again in 1999. Most of the house lots date from those two decades, so most of the lawns went down together.

Steele Creek passes through the suburb with a linear park along both sides, and the land sits about 78 m up. Three roads box it in, the Calder Highway to the south, the Tullamarine Freeway to the east and the Western Ring Road to the north-west, with the Albion-Jacana freight line near the north and west edge. A lot backing onto the creek park may have a rear fence that opens to grass; say so in the listing. Whether your block holds water after rain is something we cannot guess from here.

Moonee Valley's local law covers the nature strip as part of the property. Grass and weeds stay short of 200 mm, officers go round before summer, and an owner who lets a strip go can be billed for the council's clearing. Only council staff plant or prune the street trees. Food scraps and clippings share the green-lid FOGO bin, emptied on the fortnight between recycling weeks, and the council has said that stays fortnightly until further notice.
