Lawn mowing in Brunswick

Brunswick is five kilometres from town, nearly 5,000 people per square kilometre, and mostly Victorian terraces and early-1900s workers' cottages between Merri Creek and Moonee Ponds Creek - lawns here are small, and usually out the back.

Mowie hasn't opened Brunswick 3056 yet - suburbs switch on one cluster at a time as local mowers join. List your lawn now, free, and it is shown to the first local mowers before anyone else's; nothing is charged until a job is done and you've seen the photo.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Brunswick lawn

  • No side access? Say so. Some mowers will carry a small mower through a terrace; others will quote a line-trimmer job for the back.
  • A nature strip plus a courtyard is the standard Brunswick listing. Together they are worth a mower's stop.
  • Shaded back lawns: ask for a high cut. Scalped buffalo in the shade doesn't come back until spring.

Brunswick lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Brunswick?+

Our model says $110-$160 a visit for 180 m² of lawn, but most Brunswick lawns are far smaller and price well under it. Access - side path or through the house - is what moves a quote.

Does Merri-bek mow nature strips in Brunswick?+

The resident. Merri-bek does not maintain the strip in front of private homes; it is yours to mow, weed and edge. List it with the lawn.

Is it worth booking a mower for a tiny courtyard?+

Yes, if you bundle the nature strip and go fortnightly or monthly. Small regular jobs close together are what a mowing round is made of.

About Brunswick

A Brunswick lawn is a courtyard job. Behind a single-fronted cottage there is a patch of grass between the deck and the back fence, reached down a side path that a wheelie bin only just fits through, or through the house. Out the front there is often no lawn at all - a garden bed and a nature strip. The exceptions are the streets near Gillon Oval, Raeburn Reserve, Clifton Park and Gilpin Park, where some blocks kept a front lawn, and the townhouse developments that replaced the textile factories after the 1930s and share a common lawn.

Shade is the issue rather than area. Terraces and fences block the sun, so couch thins out and buffalo or a shade-tolerant fescue is what survives. Mowing is quick; the useful parts of a visit are the edges along the pavers, the nature strip and the blow-down, and a mower who can carry a small machine through the house.

Merri-bek does not maintain nature strips in front of private property, and clippings blown into the road or drain are a littering offence. Jewell, Brunswick and Anstey stations, Sydney Road and Lygon Street make it a walking suburb, and mowers here often work from a parked van and a trolley.
