About Brunswick East
Evans Street was subdivided in 1882 and the northern end of Lygon Street in 1887; the post office opened on 13 January 1888 and horse buses ran along Lygon Street from 1889. Brunswick South primary opened in 1886 and Brunswick East primary in 1893. The Lygon Street tram was electrified in 1916. A returned servicemen's housing area with Maori street names began in 1923, and the Nicholson Street tram opened in 1956. Prestige Hosiery arrived in 1922 and textiles declined from the 1980s. The count went from 6,845 people in 2001 to 13,279 in 2021 on the same 2.2 km².
Some of the land was swampy until drainage works changed it. Where the lawn is on your lot, front or back, and how big it is, is the whole brief. Fleming Park has held the East Brunswick clubs since 1919, with Jones Park and Allard Park and the Anderson and Roberts reserves besides.
