About Coburg
Coburg's lawns split by era. West of Sydney Road and around The Grove are Victorian and Edwardian houses with small front gardens, deep narrow blocks and a lawn out the back that is often more path than grass. East of Sydney Road toward Merri Creek is the post-WWI build - Californian bungalows and interwar brick on more regular blocks with a proper front lawn and nature strip. The Pentridge and Coburg Hill developments add townhouse courtyards and common lawns.
The grass is couch and kikuyu on basalt clay, with buffalo taking over in the shady period-home streets. Merri Creek and Coburg Lake, with its 1915 weir, are the eastern boundary, and the streets backing onto them get leaf drop and stay damp after rain; buffalo cut high does better there than couch, which thins out in shade.
