About Fawkner
A suburb built in a decade has a consistent lawn. The Fawkner block is a regular rectangle with a front lawn to the footpath, a nature strip, a concrete side path and a back yard that has spent seventy years as some mix of lawn, vegetable patch and shed. The grass is kikuyu, mostly, thick and old, on basalt clay that goes hard in summer. It mows quickly. The time goes on edging the concrete and trimming around whatever has been planted since 1955.
Streets backing onto the Merri Creek corridor - around Charles Mutton Reserve, Moomba Park and CB Smith Reserve - get shade and leaf drop and hold water longer. The rest of Fawkner is open and sunny, and couch does well where it has been sown. Bonwick Street is the shops; Gowrie and Fawkner stations are on the Upfield line; a lot of mowers here work the suburb on foot from a parked van.
Fawkner is split between Merri-bek and Hume. Merri-bek does not maintain nature strips in front of private property, counts clippings in the gutter as littering, and empties its food-and-garden bin (light green lid) weekly. Hume requires the strip kept under 400 mm and collects its lime-green bin fortnightly - every Hume household has had one since July 2024.
