Lawn mowing in Clarinda

Clarinda was coastal heathland under John O'Shannessy's squatting licence of the early 1840s, a 40,000-acre block that passed to John and Richard King in 1846. It was Bald Hills, then Bayview from 1899, and the Clarinda name dates from somewhere between 1907 and 1912.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Clarinda lawn

  • Kingston's green bin is fortnightly; if one spring cut would fill it, choose clippings taken away.
  • On the elevated sand, a lawn that browns off wants a longer cut in summer; ask for one.
  • Give the gate width and which side of the house it is; a 95 cm gate takes the wide machine.

Clarinda lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Clarinda?+

Our model's Clarinda figure, $105-$150, is for a 180 m² lawn per mow. That is a guide for a medium lawn; the mowers who bid see your block measured from the aerial and price that.

Does Kingston mow the nature strip in Clarinda?+

Only when it is a hazard. The resident mows, waters and maintains it; the council helps with hazards and keeps the trees, pruning them every second year. Add the strip and the mower cuts both on the one trip.

Is Clarinda soil sand or clay?+

Sand, for the district as a whole: it is described as an elevated sandy location, with market gardens on the better soil and sand quarries in the south. That says nothing about your block in particular. If yours is on the sand, a higher cut through summer keeps it green longer than water alone.

About Clarinda

The place is predominantly an elevated sandy location, with views to Port Phillip Bay, market gardens on the better soil and open heathland on the rest. The former sand quarries in the south are now used for waste disposal and recycling. A primary school opened in the Presbyterian church of 1886 in 1899, with additions in 1953 and 1957; the post office of 13 September 1911 closed in 1971 and reopened in 1984 after the suburb's redevelopment. Clarinda was separated from Clayton South in the late 1990s, and its drive-in shopping centre serves much of Clayton South too. Population went from 189 in 1933 to 7,961 in 2001.

Sand drains quickly. If your lawn is on the elevated sand, say whether it browns off in a hot week; a higher cut does more for it than water. If it sits on the better soil the market gardens used, it may hold on longer, and only you can say which. Take the listing photo when the lawn is at its normal length, and if a reserve or the old quarry land is over your back fence, say that too, and say what comes over it.

In Kingston it is the resident who mows, waters and generally maintains the nature strip; the council steps in for hazards and prunes the trees on the strip every second year. Strip trees are council-owned, and plantings may be no more than 0.5 m high and must sit 0.5 m back from the kerb. Green-lid garden bins are a standard service here, collected fortnightly on garbage day, alternating with the recycling week.
