Lawn mowing in Oakleigh
John and Archibald McMillan took up a grazing run called Scotchmans Creek in the early 1840s. The township was surveyed on it in 1853 and named Oakleigh, with a post office and a Church of England the next year and a school in 1855.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Oakleigh lawn
- The brick works fired local clay and the ground toward Oakleigh South is sandy. Say what your own lawn sits on and whether it holds water after rain.
- Say if the lawn is shaded for most of the day, and whether the shade comes from a tree or the house.
- Weekly green bin in Monash: there is no reason to leave clippings on the lawn unless you want them there.
Oakleigh lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Oakleigh?+
Our model puts a 180 m² Oakleigh lawn at $110-$155 per visit. The bids you get are for your block's measured area, and a smaller lawn comes in under the guide.
Am I responsible for the nature strip in Oakleigh?+
Yes. Monash owns the strip but the owner or occupier maintains it, and the council's reporting page takes photos of overgrown ones. Anything planted there needs a permit and stays under 50 cm. Listing the strip with the lawn gets both cut together.
Is Oakleigh on clay or sand?+
Both. The brick and tile works fired local clay until 1953, and the ground to the south, in Oakleigh South, is sandy and fairly flat, enough so for three golf courses. Tell the mower what is under your own lawn when you list.
About Oakleigh
The Gippsland railway began at Oakleigh in 1877 and reached South Yarra two years later, and the town grew on what came with it: railway workshops, sand mining for mortar, market gardens, and brick and tile works firing the local clay, which supplied about a fifth of Melbourne's bricks until 1953. Oakleigh was a shire from 1871, a borough in 1891, a town in 1924 and a city in 1927, and was folded into Monash in 1994. Australia's first motel opened here in 1956. Chadstone shopping centre opened nearby in 1960.
The ground is the thing to ask about. The brick and tile works fired local clay until 1953 and the sand miners worked the same district, and the land to the south, in Oakleigh South, is sandy and fairly flat, the reason the Metropolitan, Commonwealth and Huntingdale golf courses sit there. Scotchmans Creek gave the run its name and may have given the suburb its own, if the she-oaks along it are the origin; Oakleigh Park in Hertfordshire and a settler called Mrs Oakley are the other two theories, none confirmed. The suburb is small, 3.5 square kilometres.
Oakleigh is City of Monash. The council owns the nature strip and expects the owner or occupier to keep it maintained, with overgrown strips reported by photo and followed up by its Horticulture and Community Amenity teams. Plantings on the strip need a permit, stay under 50 cm and leave a 1.4 m footpath clear; no concrete, pavers or rocks. Every street tree is a council tree and residents may not prune one. The green-lid 240 L food and garden bin is collected weekly, included in the rates waste charge.
