Lawn mowing in Clayton
Clayton was farmed from the 1850s and had a school at the corner of Dandenong Road and Clayton Road by 1862. The Gippsland railway, laid about a kilometre south of Dandenong Road in 1878, started a second township at the Clayton Road crossing, and the post office took the name Clayton in 1891.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Clayton lawn
- Say which side of the railway you are on and the nearest cross street off Clayton Road. Mowers build rounds by street, not by suburb.
- Measure the side gate before you list. Under 70 cm means a push mower only, and that changes the quote on a big back lawn.
- The Monash green bin is emptied weekly. Tick 'clippings in the green bin' unless you would rather they were mulched back in.
Clayton lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Clayton?+
A 180 m² lawn in Clayton comes out at $105-$150 per visit in our model. Your own bids come off the aerial measurement of your block, so a small lawn and a large one are each quoted on their own area.
Who maintains the nature strip in Clayton?+
You do, as the owner or occupier; Monash owns the strip but expects you to keep it maintained, and it takes reports of overgrown strips with a photo. Put the strip on your listing and it is cut in the same visit. The street tree stays the council's to prune.
Is the green bin collected every week in Monash?+
Yes. The green-lid food and garden bin has been weekly since August 2022, while landfill and recycling went fortnightly. The standard 240 L bin is covered by the rates waste charge; a second bin costs extra.
About Clayton
By 1900 the district had farms and market gardens, three hotels and two churches, and around the turn of the century the Talbot Colony for Epileptics was set up on the land that later became Monash University. The university opened at Clayton North in 1961. Factories came after the war: Dulux, Bosch, Repco, and a Volkswagen plant that later built Nissans. Westall and Clayton West primaries followed in 1961-62, the two high schools by 1965, the Australian Synchrotron in 2007 and Monash Children's Hospital from 2014. The name is from Clayton Vale, the property lawyer John Hughes Clayton held here in the 1860s and 70s.
Clayton covers 7.7 square kilometres, and the university campus, the hospital precinct and the synchrotron site take up a share of it. The houses sit in the rest, from the township streets either side of the railway outward. A mower needs three things from you: which side of the line you are on, how wide the side gate is, and what the grass was last cut at. Gates under 70 cm take a push mower only; 70-95 cm is standard.
The suburb moved from the City of Oakleigh to the City of Monash in the 1994-95 amalgamations, and Monash's rules apply. The council owns the nature strip and expects the owner or occupier to keep it maintained; an overgrown one can be reported with a photo. Plantings on the strip need a permit and stay under 50 cm, with a 1.4 m clear footpath zone. Street trees are the council's to prune, not yours. The green-lid 240 L food and garden bin goes out weekly, and has since August 2022, so clippings never wait a fortnight.
