Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Oakleigh East lawn

  • Beside one of the reserves? Say if you have a fence there or open ground; it changes the edging.
  • Give the gate's side of the house and its width; 70-95 cm is the usual, wider takes the big gear.
  • Monash does all the pruning of street trees itself; a note that the strip tree drops bark or leaf gets you a blow-down before the cut.

Oakleigh East lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Oakleigh East?+

For a standard 180 m² Oakleigh East lawn the model's number for one cut is $105-$155. Bids are made against your lawn's traced area, so the number on your listing can sit either side of that.

Does Monash mow the nature strip in Oakleigh East?+

No. The strip is Monash's land and the upkeep is left to whoever lives there; one photo of an overgrown strip is enough for the council to follow it up. Only the council prunes the tree on it, and a planting needs a permit and a 50 cm cap.

Is there a creek near Oakleigh East lawns?+

Not any more inside the boundary. The Scotchmans Creek section went to Mount Waverley by 1982, when the eastern edge moved to Macrina Street. Water on a lawn here is about the block itself, so tell the mower what yours does after rain.

About Oakleigh East

Amsleigh Park Primary opened in 1929 as Oakleigh East, Oakleigh High in 1956 and Amstel primary in 1958, and the Oakleigh Motel dates from 1956; a second post office opened in 1967 on Huntingdale Road north of Dandenong Road. The boundaries have shifted a good deal. By 1970 the suburb ran along Scotchmans Creek from Stephensons Road to Scotchmans Hill, and by 1982 most of that creek country had become Mount Waverley and the eastern boundary moved to Macrina Street, so no creek frontage remains inside the suburb now. Elevation is 85 m. Population went from 5,499 in 2001 to 6,804 in 2021.

Open ground is in five reserves: Princes Highway Reserve, with the footbridge built for high-school students, Reg Harris Reserve, Hurst Reserve, Cheel Street Reserve and F E Hunt Reserve, and Oakleigh District Football Club is based in the suburb. There are few shops in Huntingdale Road, some corner stores, and local parks along Ferntree Gully Road, with the commercial corners at Huntingdale Road and the Princes Highway and at Ferntree Gully Road and Macrina Street. Nothing is written down about the ground under the houses, so the listing carries it: how the lawn drains, whether the block slopes towards the road, and where the side gate is.

Monash is the council. It owns the nature strip, the upkeep is the owner's or occupier's, and a strip reported with a photo gets followed up. The street trees are council trees, pruned by nobody else. Since August 2022 the 240 L organics bin (green lid) has gone out weekly, landfill and recycling each on a fortnight; the standard bin is paid for through the rates waste charge.
