About Altona Meadows
Fifty years of the same houses means the lawns here have been kept, dug up, re-laid and mown by several owners each. What is behind the gate varies more than it does on an estate, and it is the trimming rather than the mowing that decides how long a visit takes - so the useful thing to put in a listing is what has to be worked around.
The suburb runs down into Cheetham Wetlands in the south, where boardwalks cross the old lagoons, and a linear park follows Skeleton Creek to Bruce Comben Reserve and its ovals. A.B. Shaw Reserve is on the northern side. The soil is the plain's clay, slow in winter and hard in summer, and a higher cut through the hot months does more for a lawn here than extra water does.
Altona Meadows is City of Hobsons Bay, and the council is direct in writing: residents are required to maintain the strip next to their property, and it does no renovation or maintenance of nature strips at all. Altona Meadows Primary opened in about 1982 and Altona Green in 1990, and the suburb has one drive-in shopping centre.
