Lawn mowing in Seabrook

Seabrook was part of the Western Gardens estate opened in the mid-1990s, and it is named, most likely, after Seabrook Boulevard, which loops around the eastern half. At 1.6 square kilometres and just under 5,000 people, it has been full since about 2001.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Seabrook lawn

  • Soft and springy underfoot is thatch. Ask about scarifying in late spring rather than dropping the cut height.
  • If the block stays wet after rain, tell the mower - it changes which day suits.
  • Include the nature strip in the listing if you want it done; it is not assumed.

Seabrook lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Seabrook?+

For 180 m² of lawn the guide runs $100 to $145. A thirty-year-old lawn that has gone a month or two without a cut is a first cut rather than a mow and is priced that way, and the nature strip is added to the listing if you want it done.

Is the nature strip the council's job in Seabrook?+

No. Hobsons Bay requires residents to maintain the strip beside their property and does not mow or renovate strips itself. Plantings instead of grass have to stay under 500 mm at maturity.

My lawn feels spongy underfoot. What is that?+

Thatch: a layer of old runners and clippings that builds up in an established couch or kikuyu lawn. Scarifying in late spring clears it. Cutting lower does not fix it and scalps the lawn on the way through.

About Seabrook

The turf laid here in the mid-1990s has had thirty years to root properly into the clay, so these are established lawns rather than fragile new ones. They take a dry January better than new turf does, and they grow hard enough in spring to want a fortnightly cut rather than a monthly one.

A lawn of that age can also build thatch - a springy layer of old runners and clippings under the surface that makes it feel soft underfoot. Scarifying in late spring, once the grass is properly moving, is the fix; cutting lower is not, and on clay it does harm. A linear park runs along Skeleton Creek on the northern edge of the suburb.

Seabrook is City of Hobsons Bay, 19 km from the city. Seabrook Primary opened in 1997, and the shops are a small strip with take-away food and a service station at Point Cook Road and Mintaro Way. The council plants and maintains the street trees; the strip under them is the resident's, and Hobsons Bay does no renovation or maintenance of nature strips.
