About Point Cook
Sanctuary Lakes went up on the old Cheetham Salt land around a Greg Norman golf course. Featherbrook, Soho and Tribeca villages followed. A lawn here is generally as old as its street: one laid in the late 1990s has soil that has settled under it, and one laid in the last few years is still instant turf over builder's fill.
The suburb runs to 38 square kilometres, and a fair part of that is not houses at all - the RAAF College, Point Cook Coastal Park around the old Chirnside homestead, and the Cheetham Wetlands at the mouth of Skeleton Creek. Point Cook Town Centre on Dunnings Road, with two discount department stores, a supermarket, a library and about 150 shops, is the middle of it.
The point itself was named after John M. Cooke of HMS Rattlesnake in 1836, and the Chirnside homestead and stables of about 1857 are still down there in the coastal park. Once it is established, the grass is couch and kikuyu on the plain's clay, and buffalo where a house shades its own side return. Wyndham City is the council, and its local law caps the grass on your nature strip at 30 cm.
