About Altona North
The plan came first and the people second. The Broadway, The Highway (now McIntosh Street) and Marion Street still run out from The Circle, where the shopping centre sits. Gilbertson's abattoir opened in 1955 and ran until 1996. The primary, high and technical schools were built between 1959 and 1965, Altona Gate primary in 1960 and Bayside P-12 at Paisley in 1972. Altona Gate Shopping Centre opened in 1977 with 88 shops. The Mason Street Housing Commission estate followed in 1983.
The suburb is changing shape again. Toyota assembly ceased in 2017, and the Don Smallgoods site, which worked from 1970 to 2011, is among the industrial land being converted to housing since 2018. A lawn on those streets is new turf, and the month it went down matters more to a mower than anything else about it. Kororoit Creek Road is the southern boundary with Altona; Newport is east and Laverton west. Altona Memorial Park and Paisley Park are the open ground, and the Altona Lakes golf course sits on the former briquette depot.
