Lawn mowing in Altona
Alfred Langhorne leased the land and built The Homestead in 1842, and the name Altona - after the German town on the Elbe - was on maps by 1861. The suburb separated from Werribee Shire on 29 May 1957, became a city in 1968 and merged into Hobsons Bay in 1994.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Altona lawn
- Say whether the house is on the coastal flats or the basalt inland, and what the lawn does after a wet week.
- Backing onto Cherry Lake or the creek? Mention it, and whether the rear boundary is a fence or an open edge that needs trimming.
- Fortnightly bin, 120 L: on a big block ask for a mulching cut, or take the 240 L upgrade before spring.
Altona lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Altona?+
A 180 m² Altona lawn prices at $100-$145 for a standard cut in our model. A front and back lawn on one block lands in that band; a long strip on the listing adds to it.
Is the nature strip mine to look after in Altona?+
Yes. Hobsons Bay requires residents to keep the strip maintained and free of trip hazards, and the council does no maintenance or reinstatement. Add it to the listing and it is cut with the lawn.
Is Altona ground sand or clay?+
Depends on the street. The coast is alluvial flats and estuarine deposits; inland is basalt plain. Tell the mower which you have and how the lawn drains.
About Altona
Altona took a long time to become houses. A syndicate bought the property in 1887 and brought Yan Yean water and a railway extension from Newport; trains ran from 1888, stopped in 1890 and did not come back until 1917. Coal was mined here from 1908 to 1919. A Sydney syndicate began subdividing in 1913, the primary school opened in 1915 and the post office on 14 January 1918. Refineries arrived in 1924 and 1949, the petrochemical plant in 1961, and the population went from 2,841 in 1947 to 16,167 in 1961.
Two kinds of ground sit inside the 16.9 square kilometres. Alluvial flats and estuarine deposits run along the coast, and basalt plains sit inland. Cherry Lake is a former swamp. Kororoit Creek, Altona Coastal Park and the Truganina Coastal Parklands are the other open ground. On the basalt side the clay is wet in winter and cracked in summer; the flats are a different soil, and the customer is the one who knows which they have. Seaholme primary opened in 1952 and Westona station in 1985.
Hobsons Bay expects the resident to maintain the strip and keep it free of trip hazards, and does no maintenance or reinstatement of its own. The light-green-lid food and garden bin is collected fortnightly, 120 L as standard, 240 L for an added annual charge. Say which size you have when you list: a 120 L fills on one spring cut of a full block, and the mower can mulch the rest back in instead.
