The kikuyu and couch on these blocks have had sixty years to thicken into the basalt clay, and in October and November that grass grows faster than most people plan for. A fortnight is a real fortnight's worth. Skip a cut and the next one is slower and dearer, because you cannot take more than about a third of the leaf in one go without leaving the lawn yellow and open to weeds.
Through summer the clay is the thing to respect: keep the height up so the soil stays shaded rather than dropping the mower to buy an extra week. Streets in the Baden and Powell Drive estate carry Richmond footballers' names, the station opened in 1970, the local shopping centre in 1981, and Werribee Plaza - now Pacific Werribee - in 1985.
Skeleton Creek runs down the eastern boundary, and most of the parkland is strung along it and the drainage reserves rather than gathered in one place. The council is Wyndham City, whose local law caps the grass on a nature strip at 30 cm and leaves the mowing with the resident; the trees the council planted on the strip are its own to look after, and cutting one is an offence.
