About Werribee
Werribee has two ages of lawn. The old town around the station and the river has established blocks from the mid-1900s with a front lawn, a nature strip and a deep back yard, on basalt clay that has had decades to settle. The estates that have spread across the 24 square kilometres since the 1990s have builder's lawns on compacted clay, small front lawns, wide nature strips and the first-summer problems that go with a new lawn on the western plain - shallow roots, heat, and the dry northerly.
The plain is flat and open; the river corridor and Werribee Park are the shade. Couch and kikuyu do well in the sun once established; buffalo on the treed older streets. Summer here is hotter and drier than the north-east, and a higher cut from December is the single most useful thing a mower does for a Werribee lawn.
