About Beaumaris
Josiah Holloway laid out Beaumaris Town and Beaumaris Estate from 1852, but growth was slow until the 1880s. That decade brought the Beaumaris Park Estate auction of 1888, a horse tram from Sandringham the same year, and the 61-room Great Southern Hotel near Ricketts Point. Royal Melbourne Golf Club's first course opened in 1901, the school moved to Dalgetty Road in 1917, and the electric tram reached Beaumaris in 1926-31. Bushfires in 1944 destroyed somewhere between 63 and 100 homes. Substantial residential growth followed after the war; the high school opened in 1958 and Beaumaris North primary in 1959.
Beaumaris is a peninsula into Port Phillip, and its cliffs expose the Beaumaris Monocline: Silurian bedrock under about 15 metres of Beaumaris Sandstone and Red Bluff Sandstone with ironstone, with a fossil bed of 12 to 6 million years ago behind Keefers wharf. The cliffs form the divide between the Gardiners and Dandenong Creek systems and the Carrum Swamp. The soil is sandy, carrying the indigenous ti-tree, gums and banksia. Swamp Paperbark grows in the damp soil of a natural depression at Ricketts Point, so the ground is not the same across the whole peninsula.
Bayside covers the whole suburb. Its rule is that residents maintain the nature strip by law while the council manages the trees, with strip plantings kept under 0.6 metres. A food and green bin is not supplied on the rates; it costs $104.85 one-off, comes with a caddy, and is then emptied weekly with general waste every second week. Ricketts Point has been a marine sanctuary since 2002, and Keefers boatshed has stood since about 1901.
