Lawn mowing in Black Rock
Black Rock takes its name from Black Rock House, built by Charles Hotson Ebden in 1856 and named after Black Rock in Dublin. Josiah Holloway's Bluff Town estate of the 1850s, between Beach Road and Bluff Road, sold slower than in other areas.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Black Rock lawn
- If your lawn drops toward the bay, say how steep the fall is and whether a mower can walk across it.
- Bayside's bin is only there if someone paid the $104.85 for it; check before you list clippings as binned.
- Measure the side gate; anything under 70 cm takes a push mower only, 70 to 95 cm a standard one.
Black Rock lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Black Rock?+
Black Rock's 180 m² guide comes out at $115-$160 each cut. What a mower bids on is your own block's aerial measurement, so a smaller lawn comes under that figure and a bigger one goes over.
Who maintains the nature strip in Black Rock?+
The resident. Bayside makes maintaining the strip in front of your property a legal requirement, and the council's part is the trees on it. Put the strip on the listing to have it done with the lawn.
What is the ground like under Black Rock lawns?+
Red Bluff is cliff with oxidised iron in it, and the suburb sits about 16 metres up, but that is the coast, not the blocks. What your own lawn does after rain, and which way it falls, is for you to say when you list.
About Black Rock
A horse tram ran between Sandringham, Black Rock and Beaumaris from 1888 until 1914. An electric tram replaced it in 1919, was cut back to Black Rock in 1931 and closed altogether in 1956. The post office dates from 1902, the state primary school from 1910 and the yacht club from 1919. The hull of the colonial warship Cerberus was sunk as a breakwater at Half Moon Bay in 1926, three years after the Semco cotton-thread factory opened on Cheltenham Road, where it ran until 1970. Royal Melbourne Golf Club's courses, shared with Cheltenham, date from 1931. The count was 5,442 in 2001 and 5,944 ten years later.
The coast here is cliff. Red Bluff stands beside Half Moon Bay, and the oxidised iron in its face gives off a burnt orange colour; Quiet Corner is 2 km south, and a coastal reserve runs along the bay that has held yachts since the 1890s. The suburb covers 3.7 square kilometres at about 16 metres. Inland the named open ground is Black Rock Gardens, opposite the Clock Tower on Beach Road, and F.G. Tricks Reserve at Bluff Road and Fern Street. Cliffs and reserves say nothing about what a Black Rock block is made of, so tell the mower whether yours drains fast or sits wet, and which way it falls.
Bayside is the council, and by its rule the strip in front of a house is the resident's to maintain, by law, while the council manages the trees on it. Plantings on the strip stay under 0.6 metres, and anything outside the guidelines needs a planting approval. Bayside's food and green bin is not on the rates. A one-off $104.85 buys a 240 or 120 litre bin with a kitchen caddy, emptied weekly, while general waste goes fortnightly, as it has since July 2022. Without that order there is no bin for clippings.
