Lawn mowing in Ashburton
The Outer Circle railway ran a spur south from Camberwell to Norwood station by 1891, renamed Ashburton at the suggestion of a former councillor who had lived in Ashburton Terrace, Cork. The line did not bring the houses; the locality was then best known for the Ashburton Forest overlooking Gardiners Creek, a picnic site.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Ashburton lawn
- Near the golf course or the Gardiners Creek Trail, say if the back fence is open to the reserve and if the lawn holds water.
- Weekly FOGO bin: ask for the clippings binned with the edge trimmings rather than left in a pile.
- Streets named Tobruk, Benghazi and Victory are the Commission-era ones; a lawn there has been cut since the late 1940s unless it was relaid, so say if it was.
Ashburton lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Ashburton?+
A 180 m² lawn in Ashburton comes out at $115-$160 a mow in our model. Bids are priced on the traced outline of your own block, so the number is a starting point.
Does Boroondara mow the nature strip in Ashburton?+
No. The council neither mows nor waters nor sprays strips and expects the resident to mow the one outside their place. Add it to the listing and the mower does it after the lawn.
Is the creek end of Ashburton wetter?+
Gardiners Creek is the southern boundary, with the trail and Malvern Valley golf course along it, and the old Ashburton Forest looked down on the creek from above. If your lawn is at the creek end and stays soft after rain, say so.
About Ashburton
The 1920s brought a few shops, orchards and market gardens, the post office on 15 December 1927 and Ashburton Primary on Fakenham Road in 1928. Then the post-war expansion, and much of the housing was built by the Housing Commission. The railway was extended one station to Alamein in 1948 for those residents, and the streets took the names of the war: Victory Boulevard, Benghazi Avenue, Tobruk Road, Lancaster and Liberator Streets. A Catholic primary opened in 1946, Solway school in 1950 as Darling East, St Michael's church in 1955; the Alamein primary closed in 1997. Population was 6,741 in 2001 and 7,586 ten years later.
Gardiners Creek borders the south, the Gardiners Creek Trail passing through the southern end and Malvern Valley golf course lying beside the creek. Ashburton Park and Warner Reserve, with the pools, are the main reserves, and the shops are on High Street near the station and on Victory Boulevard at Alamein. The suburb is 2.9 square kilometres. A Commission-era block and a lawn at the creek end are the two things to be clear about when listing: say whether the grass is front, back or both, how the mower reaches the back, and whether the low ground near the creek holds water after rain.
Ashburton is City of Boroondara. The council's position is that it does not mow, water or spray nature strips and that residents mow the strip outside their own place. Lawn clippings, leaves, weeds and branches up to 75 mm go in the lime-green-lid FOGO bin, which has been collected every week since 4 May 2020, inside the waste levy on rates, so clippings have somewhere to go every week of spring.
