Lawn mowing in Ashwood
Until the early 1950s Warrigal Road was the edge of the suburbs, with market gardens, poultry farms and unmade roads to the east. Houses started going up early in that decade, where the Glen Waverley railway line crosses, and by 1951 an estimated 1,500 people lived in what was called a rapidly developing area.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Ashwood lawn
- Front, back or both, and a side gate measured in centimetres; anything under 70 cm takes a push mower.
- Backing onto Gardiners Creek or Ashwood Reserve? Say whether the rear fence is solid or open, and what blows over it.
- Monash empties the green bin every week, so clippings can go in it; tick clippings taken away when you list if you would rather they went.
Ashwood lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Ashwood?+
Our model reckons $105-$155, cut by cut, for an Ashwood lawn of 180 m². The mowers quote off your block's aerial area, and a lot with grass front and back can measure more than that.
Do I have to mow the nature strip in Ashwood?+
Yes, as the owner or occupier: Monash holds the land and leaves the upkeep to you, and a neighbour can report an overgrown strip with a photo. The tree on it is council property, pruned by the council. Tick the strip when you list and the one visit covers both.
How big is a typical Ashwood lawn?+
There is no figure for it. The 1950s houses are double-fronted cream brick on what were described as comfortable allotments, but that describes the district, not your block. Your listing gets an aerial trace of your own lawn, so there is no need to guess the area.
About Ashwood
The post office opened on 3 October 1949 as Ashburton East and took the Ashwood name in 1951; Jordanville followed in 1953 and Stocksville ran from 1955 to 1993. The typical house of that decade is double-fronted cream brick on a comfortable allotment, and the Warrigal Road shops were laid out for cars, with angle parking out the front. Robin Boyd's igloo-shaped concrete supermarket of 1953-54 at the Stocksville shops is on the Victorian Heritage Register. Ashwood Heights, subdivided early in 1958 by the Sunhill Corporation, was the first large housing development, and the suburb's name is either that estate's or a blend of Ashburton and Burwood.
Gardiners Creek forms part of the northern boundary, with Ashwood Reserve and its hockey ground beside it; Electra Reserve and Salisbury Reserve are the other open ground. Huntingdale Road is the eastern edge, the railway the southern and Warrigal Road the western, and Holmesglen, Jordanville and Ashburton are the nearest stations. Elevation is 47 m. Nothing written about Ashwood says what the soil is like, so tell the mower yourself: a back lawn that stays soft for a week after rain, or a front lawn under a big street tree, is the kind of thing to put in the listing.
Ashwood is City of Monash. The strip between your fence and the kerb is council land, and the owner or occupier is the one expected to keep it maintained; send the council a photo of an overgrown one and it follows up. Every strip tree is a council tree, pruned by the council alone, and planting anything there means a permit, a 50 cm height cap and 1.4 m of clear footpath. Food and garden scraps go in the 240 L bin with the green lid, which has gone out every week since August 2022; landfill and recycling take alternate fortnights, and the standard bin sits inside the rates waste charge.
