About Glen Iris
A Wesleyan church came in 1865 and a school in 1871-72. A general store followed in 1882, and by the 1880s there was a Township of Glen Iris. The Burnley-Oakleigh railway opened in 1890 through the Glen Iris Valley, with stations at Tooronga and Gardiner as well as Glen Iris, then lost part of its Outer Circle connection in 1895. By 1917 the Malvern side had three tramlines. Camberwell South primary opened in 1925. The Harold Holt swimming centre of 1969 is heritage-listed, and the South Eastern Freeway, now the Monash, opened along the creek in 1970. Between the 1990s and the 2020s the suburb was Melbourne's centre of population.
Gardiners Creek, Kooyongkoot to the Wurundjeri, crosses the suburb with the freeway and the Glen Waverley line following its course. It flooded regularly in parts of Ashburton and Glen Iris in the 1950s, sustenance workers straightened it in the 1930s, and its tributaries were later barrelled. Back Creek, which runs north through the suburb, has largely been turned into a drain. VICSES publishes a local flood guide titled Glen Iris at Gardiners Creek.
The creek is also the council boundary: Boroondara on one side, Stonnington on the other. Boroondara does not mow nature strips and expects residents to mow the strip outside their place; its FOGO bin, dark green with a lime lid, takes lawn clippings, leaves and branches to 75 mm, unbagged, and is emptied weekly, with one 120 L bin and a caddy covered by the Waste Environment Levy on the rates. Stonnington's untidy-premises clause caps grass, strip included, at 30 cm, and its green-lid FOGO bin comes fortnightly, 120 L at $89 a year. Check which council bills you before assuming a bin day.
