About Balwyn
A large Balwyn block is a large lawn: a wide front lawn behind a low fence or hedge, a driveway down one side, and a back yard that runs to a rear fence with room for a pool and a lawn beside it. The interwar houses were built with gardens in mind and the gardens have matured, so there are beds to edge and trees to trim under. Newer builds on the same blocks tend to fill more of the site with house and less with lawn, and the townhouse pockets near Whitehorse Road are smaller again.
The ridge drains well, the soil is the east's loam improved by decades of gardening, and the grass is couch on the sunny lawns and buffalo under the trees. Balwyn Park and Koonung Creek Reserve by the freeway are the open spaces, and Maranoa Gardens is the third; the streets that drop toward the creek get more shade.
City of Boroondara does not mow, water or spray nature strips; residents are expected to mow the strip outside their property, and the council manages the street trees.
