About Surrey Hills
The land north of Canterbury Road sat inside Henry Elgar's Special Survey of 1841. Development followed the railway. Victorian, Federation and Edwardian houses in brick or weatherboard filled Empress, Kingston, Balmoral and Windsor, the primary school opened in 1886, and the depression of the 1890s stopped the building until after the First World War. The Riversdale Road tram came in 1916. Chatham station and its school opened in 1927. J.H. Knipe, an estate agent and councillor, chose the name from the county of Surrey.
The housing allotments are relatively generous, and the Pin Oaks and Plane trees planted along the streets are now mature. Say whether one of them shades or drops on your front lawn. Tell your mower what the lawn does after rain rather than assuming. Surrey Gardens and South Surrey Park are the reserves inside the boundary, which runs along Elgar Road, Riversdale Road, Highfield Road and Whitehorse Road; Wattle Park is across Riversdale Road. The two named precincts are the English Counties District, with its Norfolk, Durham, Kent, Middlesex, Essex and Suffolk roads, and the Chatham Precinct.
The suburb is split between the City of Boroondara and the City of Whitehorse, and the rules differ. Boroondara does not mow, water or spray strips, expects you to mow yours, and empties its lime-green-lid FOGO bin every week, as it has since 4 May 2020. Whitehorse calls resident mowing common practice, but its FOGO bin is opt-in, $75.00 or $99.50 a year depending on size, and goes out fortnightly. Check your rates notice before you list.
