Lawn mowing in Kew East

Farms were taken up along the Yarra after the government land auctions of 1845 to 1847: the Wills family's Willsmere Estate for grazing and dairying, and William Wade's Belford farm, flooded in December 1863 and later the Kew Golf Course. The houses came with the 1920s.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Kew East lawn

  • Down towards the Yarra, the billabong or Hays Paddock, say if the back lawn floods or stays soft, and whether the fence is open to the reserve.
  • 1920s blocks: give the width of the side path; 70 to 95 cm suits a standard mower, narrower is push-mower ground.
  • Weekly FOGO bin: ask for edge trimmings and prunings binned with the clippings.

Kew East lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Kew East?+

Our model puts $115-$160 per cut on a 180 m² Kew East lawn. Bids come off the measured outline of your block, so a corner lot with lawn on two sides quotes above that.

Am I responsible for the nature strip in Kew East?+

Yes. Boroondara does no mowing of strips, and no watering or spraying either, and expects the strip outside your place to be mown by you. Include the strip in the listing and it is mown along with the lawn.

Which parts of Kew East are low-lying?+

The river side. Belford farm flooded in December 1863 and is now the golf course, Kew Billabong and Willsmere-Chandler Park sit by the Yarra, and Hays Paddock is on Glass Creek beside the freeway. A lawn near any of them needs a word about drainage.

About Kew East

The Harp of Erin hotel opened in 1854 at Harp Road and High Street; a Congregational church of 1859 and a school of 1892 stood at Burke and Kilby Roads. The Outer Circle railway ran north-west through the suburb from 1891 with an East Kew station that closed in 1893 and never reopened. The 1920s did what the railway had not: a new primary school in 1923, the High Street tram extended to Burke Road in 1924, the post office about the same year, the baby health centre in Strathalbyn Street in December 1925 and churches from 1925 to 1931. Kew High followed in 1963. Population was 5,788 in 2001 and 6,017 in 2011.

The Yarra bounds the north and west and Burke Road the east, with the Eastern Freeway crossing the middle east to west and flanking Hays Paddock, which sits on Glass Creek. Willsmere-Chandler Park, Kew Billabong, Hyde Park, Harrison Park and Stradbroke Park are the other reserves, and the golf course, the club dating from 1922, is on the farm that flooded in 1863. That flood marks the low ground. A 1920s lawn up on the streets and a block down towards the river or the billabong are different jobs after a wet week, and the listing is the place to say which yours is.

Kew East is City of Boroondara. Nature strips are not mown, watered or sprayed by the council; residents mow the strip outside their place. The lime-green-lid FOGO bin takes clippings, leaves, weeds and branches up to 75 mm, has been collected weekly since 4 May 2020, and is covered by the waste levy on rates.
