Lawn mowing in Mont Albert

Mont Albert has an elevated situation, which gave it the first part of its name; the Albert was probably for Prince Albert. A subdivision south of the railway line, containing the present shopping centre, went on sale in 1887, and the station opened in 1890.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Mont Albert lawn

  • Name your council when you list: a Boroondara green bin is weekly and included, a Whitehorse one fortnightly and paid for.
  • Old hedges and beds mean edging against brick, timber or bare soil, and each is a different trim.
  • If the gate between front and back is under 70 cm, say so; that is push-mower only.

Mont Albert lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Mont Albert?+

Around $115-$160 a visit for a 180 m² lawn is our model's Mont Albert figure. Wide allotments can carry more grass than that, and the bid is made on your own block's measured outline.

Who mows the nature strip in Mont Albert?+

You, on either side of the council line. Boroondara puts it plainly, no mowing, watering or spraying of strips by the council, and expects residents to mow theirs; Whitehorse describes resident mowing as common practice and plants and prunes the trees. List the strip and the mower cuts it along with the lawn.

Do the Edwardian houses come with big lawns in Mont Albert?+

The houses between the tram and the railway are Edwardian, English Domestic Revival and Arts and Crafts on wide allotments, so there is room for grass, but a century of gardening decides how much is left. Photograph the lawn itself, front and back, so the mower sees what a hedge or a bed has taken from the aerial outline.

About Mont Albert

The station closed on 17 February 2023 under the level crossing removal, after 133 years. Between those dates the suburb filled: Surrey Hills golf club held land on the north side from 1892 to 1907, the Hamilton Street shops began building in 1913, the Whitehorse Road tram reached the north-western corner in 1915 and the brick three-storey primary school opened in 1917. The houses between the tram and the railway are Edwardian, English Domestic Revival and Arts and Crafts, generously proportioned on wide allotments. Elgar Road is the eastern edge, with the old gas works, the technical college and Box Hill TAFE's Elgar campus along it and Kingsley Gardens beside them.

An 1887 subdivision on wide allotments has had close to 140 years of gardening. Where the grass actually is on your block is the thing to give: a front lawn between hedge and fence, a back lawn behind the garage, or both, and how the mower gets from one to the other. Bushy Creek and Koonung Creek are the named creeks, and a 2 km shared trail follows Bushy Creek through Elgar Park in Mont Albert North to the Koonung Creek Linear Park. The suburb is small, 1.6 square kilometres, up on its elevated ground with the creeks below; whether your lawn is on the high part or on the slope towards them is worth stating, because the aerial does not show it.

Mont Albert straddles the City of Boroondara and the City of Whitehorse, and the rules part at the boundary. Boroondara does no mowing, watering or spraying of nature strips and expects the resident to mow the strip at their own front; its lime-green-lid FOGO bin takes clippings, leaves, weeds and branches to 75 mm and has gone out weekly since 4 May 2020, inside the waste levy on rates. Whitehorse also leaves the strip mowing to residents as common practice and keeps the street trees, but its FOGO bin is opt-in at $75.00 or $99.50 a year and emptied fortnightly. Check which council your rates notice names.
