Lawn mowing in Canterbury
Canterbury is undulating and elevated to the east, and West Creek was its early water supply. Once part of Balwyn, it was named after Viscount Canterbury, Governor of Victoria from 1866 to 1873, and had a post office from 22 November 1870.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Canterbury lawn
- Under an oak, ask for the leaves blown off before the cut in April and May, and say if they go in the FOGO bin.
- A lawn that falls away to the back mows differently from a flat one, so where the block sits on the slope is worth stating.
- 1880s lots with a side path: give the width; under 70 cm the mower is a push model.
Canterbury lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Canterbury?+
Our model puts a 180 m² Canterbury lawn at $115-$160 a visit. The bid comes off the aerial outline of your own block, and an 1880s lot with lawn both sides of the house measures above that.
Does Boroondara cut the nature strip in Canterbury?+
It does not mow, water or spray them. Residents mow the strip outside their own place. Tick the strip on your listing and it goes in the same cut as the lawn.
How do the Monomeath Avenue oaks affect a lawn?+
They were planted in 1911 and are now large, century-old trees. Under one the grass is shaded through summer and covered in leaf through autumn, so the cut is a blow-down first and the bin fills fast; Boroondara's weekly FOGO bin takes leaves and branches up to 75 mm. Say in the listing if an oak stands over your lawn.
About Canterbury
The place was semi-rural until the railway from Hawthorn reached Camberwell in 1882 and Canterbury in 1883. Michael Logan's Claremont Park Estate of 1885 was the first subdivision, and by 1891 nearly all of Canterbury had been cut into house lots; about 1,000 people lived here in 1903. Edward Snowden's 7 ha around his house Monomeath was subdivided in 1900 to form Monomeath Avenue, paved and lined with oak trees in 1911, and those oaks are now large and a century old. Shrublands of 1863, Frognall and Canterbury Mansions of 1889 are the heritage houses. Schools came in a run: the primary in 1908, Camberwell Girls' Grammar 1920, Strathcona 1924, Canterbury Girls' Secondary 1928, Camberwell High 1941.
So the lawns sit on ground that rises and falls, on lots laid out in the 1880s and 90s, and along Monomeath Avenue under oaks planted in 1911. Under one of those the grass is in shade through summer and under leaf through autumn, and the mower should hear that before quoting. The boundary is Mont Albert Road, Burke Road, Chatham and Highfield Roads and Riversdale Road, with Canterbury Road cutting it east to west and the shops around the station and on Maling Road. The suburb is 3 square kilometres. Where your block sits on the slope, and what an 1890s garden has left of the grass, is what the listing is for.
Canterbury is City of Boroondara. The council's own words are that nature strips get no mowing, watering or spraying from it and that residents are expected to mow their own frontage. Clippings, leaves, weeds and branches up to 75 mm go in the lime-green-lid FOGO bin, weekly since 4 May 2020, paid for through the waste levy on rates, which matters in an oak street in autumn.
