Lawn mowing in Belgrave

Belgrave's land sales began in 1879 and progress was slow because the heavily timbered slopes had to be cleared for farms. Europeans had settled from 1851, and the Benson brothers' house Mount Belgrave, named for a chapel in Leeds, gave the town its name.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Belgrave lawn

  • Steepness, hours of sun and what the trees drop are the three things a Belgrave listing needs.
  • On a hillside, whether a machine can be driven to the lawn or has to be carried up steps decides who bids.
  • The weekly FOGO takes branches and leaves as well as clippings, so a leaf clean-up before the cut can go in the same bin.

Belgrave lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Belgrave?+

Our model's Belgrave figure, 180 m², is $100-$145 a time. Hillside lawns with steps and trimmer edges quote at the top or above it; each bid is built on the area you trace over your own aerial.

Does the council cut the nature strip in Belgrave?+

No. Yarra Ranges runs no strip-mowing program at all. Where an inspection finds grass that is extremely long and very dry, or an intersection with obscured vision, it will slash once, and its own line is that slashing is not mowing. You can add it to the lawn listing.

How do I list a lawn on a Belgrave slope?+

Say how the ground falls, whether it is terraced, and how a mower gets there: drive, side path or steps. The slopes were heavily timbered when land sales began in 1879, so add whether the lawn is shaded and what drops on it. The photo shows the rest.

About Belgrave

The slopes are still there. The town sits at 200 m in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, Monbulk Creek runs through, and Belgrave Lake, built in 1893 to pipe water to Dandenong, is now the centre of Belgrave Lake Park, a biolink between the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Birdsland and Lysterfield Lake Park. Puffing Billy runs 24 km from here through forest to Gembrook. Shade, slope and leaf are the questions to answer in the listing, along with whether a mower can walk a machine to the grass.

Until 1900 the area was counted as part of Upper Ferntree Gully. The narrow-gauge railway from Ferntree Gully opened that year with the station named Monbulk, renamed Belgrave in December 1904, and by 1920 the town was a resort with seven guest houses and four cafes, sold as the Queen township of the Dandenongs. Electric trains reached Belgrave in 1962, the year Puffing Billy reopened after four years of volunteer restoration. Population was 1,358 in 1947 and 4,146 in 2001, on 4.1 square kilometres. Main Street at the end of Burwood Highway is the shopping centre, with more shops on Bayview Road over the rail bridge, and the recreation reserve is on Reserve Road.

Belgrave's council is Yarra Ranges, which does not mow the strips outside private property under any program; one slash after a fire-hazard or sightline complaint has been confirmed is the only work it will do there. Indigenous plants are preferred, plantings stay under a metre, gravel toppings are allowed in place of grass, and artificial turf and hard paving are banned. Every residential collection includes all three bins. The lime-green FOGO bin is emptied weekly and priced by size, $143 for the 80 L, $157 for the 120 L, $201 for the 240 L in 2026-27, and the $136 base charge as well.
