About The Basin
Several tributaries of the Dandenong Creek run through, and the pattern of the place is water-course flats with rising land around them. The flats along the tributaries are flood prone; the houses are on the elevated south-western slopes. A lawn on the flat and a lawn on the slope are different jobs, so say which you have and which way the ground falls. Mountain Highway climbs out of the suburb toward Sassafras at a gradient cyclists call the 1:20.
David Dobson settled about 1870 on land that ran from what is now Wicks Reserve to Pavitt Lane, between Sheffield Road, Mountain Highway and Liverpool Road. J.J. Miller built up more than 1,000 acres from 1872 for a racehorse stud, and William Chandler, who arrived in 1873, planted the English oak still standing at 61 Basin-Olinda Road; his sons founded plant nurseries. The primary school opened in 1879, the post office about 1902, St Bernadette's in 1983. There were 851 people in 1947 and 4,147 in 2001. Doongalla Forest on the north-east side takes its name from Sir Matthew Davies's mansion. The parks are bush parks, Wicks Reserve among them, and the shops front two sides of The Basin Triangle.
Knox City Council keeps the street trees and no more of the nature strip; the resident carries every other cost on it and the council does not put grass back. Plantings stay below 500 mm, trees are not allowed. Food and garden waste goes out weekly in the green-lid bin, rubbish fortnightly, as it has since 3 July 2023. One 240 L FOGO bin comes with the 2025-26 waste charge of $434.55; a second one runs $150.25 a year.
