About Boronia
Selectors took land from the 1870s for orchards, flowers and farming, and Miller Homestead of 1888, now National Trust, is the main building left from that time. The Ringwood to Upper Ferntree Gully railway of 1889 ran past without stopping until 1920. The post office opened that year, the first store and the primary school in 1923, three churches between 1921 and 1923, the high school in 1957. On 1 June 1952 a level-crossing crash killed 13 people; the crossing that split the shopping centre was replaced by an underpass in 1998. Population: 625 in 1933, 2,057 in 1947, 20,257 in 2001.
The terrain is green and hilly, in the Dandenong Ranges foothills with nature reserves, across 11.3 square kilometres, and the streets carry botanical names - Sycamore Crescent, Cypress Avenue. Hills mean slope, and slope is the thing to describe when you list. A line about how your lawn drains is worth more than a guess about the district.
Knox City Council plants and maintains the street trees; the rest of the nature strip, its mowing and every other cost, is the resident's, and the council will not restore its grass. Plantings on it are limited to 500 mm high for sightlines and no trees may be added.
