Lawn mowing in Lysterfield
Lysterfield is a valley along the Monbulk Creek with low ranges and a basin, its watercourses draining to Lysterfield Lake. The name was chosen at a public meeting in 1874, after William Saurin Lyster, the operatic impresario who gave land on Wellington Road for the school.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Lysterfield lawn
- Both councils empty FOGO weekly, but the Yarra Ranges bin is charged per bin and Knox's first one is in the waste charge; name yours.
- Valley floor or slope? Say where the lawn sits and whether a machine can be walked from the road to the back.
- Lysterfield Road is one of the state's major blackspots; tell the mower where to park.
Lysterfield lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Lysterfield?+
Lysterfield's guide figure in our model is $105-$150 on 180 m², one visit. A block with lawn front and back measures above that, and the quote you get is built from your own lawn's measured area rather than the suburb figure.
Does anyone mow the nature strip in Lysterfield?+
Not the council, on either side of the boundary. Knox plants and keeps the street trees and leaves every other strip cost to the resident. Yarra Ranges says outright that mowing the grass on a strip outside private property is not something it has a program for, and that one slash does not count as mowing. List the strip and the mower does it.
Do the lake park and the creek affect my lawn?+
Lysterfield Lake Park runs from Narre Warren North to Belgrave Heights, and the suburb's watercourses drain to the lake along the Monbulk Creek valley. If your fence backs onto the park or a creek line, say whether bush comes over it and whether the low side of the lawn stays wet.
About Lysterfield
The land was farmed from 1838, and it stayed farmed a long time: 249 people in 1954, 2,771 in 2001, 6,551 in 2011. The pine Avenue of Honour along Lysterfield Road was first planted in 1918-19 for First World War veterans. The lake was built in 1929 by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission to supply the Mornington Peninsula, Springvale and Dandenong. Lysterfield Lake Park was reserved from the catchment, runs from Narre Warren North to Belgrave Heights, and is one-third in Knox, most of the rest in Yarra Ranges. The Donlane and Dargon homestead ruins and their orchards are inside it.
The suburb sits about 144 m up. Ferntree Gully lies to the north, Narre Warren to the south and Rowville to the west, with a quarry on the western ranges. A valley floor and the rising ground behind it are two different lawns: say which yours is, which way it falls, and whether the creek side stays soft in winter. Give the year the house went up and the mower reads the rest from the photo.
Lysterfield sits across Knox and Yarra Ranges, and the two councils treat the strip differently. Knox keeps the street trees and hands the resident every other cost on the nature strip, will not restore its grass, and caps plantings at 500 mm; its green-lid FOGO bin is weekly, one 240 L bin inside the $434.55 waste charge for 2025-26. Yarra Ranges has no mowing program for strips at all, and a single slash after a complaint about a fire hazard or an obscured intersection is the most it offers; its lime-green FOGO bin is also weekly, compulsory, and charged per bin, $143 to $201 depending on size, plus a $136 base in 2026-27.
