About Ferntree Gully
Two hotels, a post office and the first selectors arrived in the 1870s; a school was built in 1880 and the shops, bakery and churches followed. The Shire of Fern Tree Gully was proclaimed on 30 May 1889 with a population of 750. A narrow-gauge line reached Gembrook by 1900, electric trains ran from 1929, and the line was rebuilt to broad gauge and electrified through to Belgrave between 1958 and 1962. Kent Park took its name from a 70 ha estate in the early 1900s. Johnson Park and Fairhills, both Stockdale & Leggo estates of 1959, built on through the 1960s. Knox Shire was severed on 16 November 1963.
The suburb sits in the Dandenong Ranges foothills, 14 square kilometres bordering Ferntree Gully National Park on the east and Dandenong Ranges National Park to the north. Ferntree Creek runs through the gully between One Tree Hill and Upper Ferntree Gully station. Foothills and a fern gully mean slope; say how your block drains and how it falls.
Knox City Council plants and maintains the street trees and makes every other nature strip cost the resident's, including the grass it will not restore; plantings on the strip stay under 500 mm and trees are not permitted.
