Lawn mowing in Upwey

Upwey is hilly country at 220 m, two kilometres west of Belgrave, with three creeks through it: Ferny Creek, Monbulk Creek and Mast Gully Creek, all draining to Port Phillip through the Corhanwarrabul catchment. Ship masts were cut from the gully in 1850, and Mast Gully kept the name.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Upwey lawn

  • The fall of the lawn, and any steps between the drive and the grass, decide what machine turns up.
  • By Ferny, Monbulk or Mast Gully creek, say if the bottom of the block stays soft through winter.
  • Weekly FOGO takes leaves and branches too; a bush-edge block can have the leaf blown off and binned in the same visit.

Upwey lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Upwey?+

An Upwey lawn of 180 m² sits in the $100-$145 range per visit in our model. Steep, stepped or shaded lawns tend to price toward the top, and the bid is calculated from the outline traced over your own aerial, not an average.

Do I mow the nature strip in Upwey?+

The council does not. By its own account it runs nothing that mows strip grass outside private property; it slashes once, when a complaint has been inspected and a fire hazard or a sightline problem confirmed, and no more. Grass, indigenous ground cover or gravel toppings are fine on it; artificial turf is banned. Add it to the listing if you want it done.

Is Upwey too hilly for a ride-on?+

That depends on the lawn, and the listing tells the mower. The terrain is hilly, at 220 m, with three creeks cutting through it, so say how much fall there is, whether the lawn is terraced, and whether the only way in is steps. A push mower and a trimmer handle what a ride-on cannot.

About Upwey

John Ferguson, a coach builder, was the first known settler about 1870 with roughly 600 acres covering the present township; his homestead still stands at 28 Birdwood Avenue. The Tullidge sisters renamed their homestead Upwey in 1897 after the English village on the River Wey, a railway stopping place was approved that year, and the name spread from the station. The primary school opened in 1934, the high school in 1945, Upwey South Primary in 1964. Population went from 1,770 in 1947 to 6,897 in 2001, across 7 square kilometres, so most of the town came after the war.

The reserves are the bush ones: Forest Park Reserve, Ferny Creek Reserve, the recreation reserves for bowls and tennis, and Glenfern Valley Bushlands, 40 hectares of Grassy Forest and Herb Rich Foothill Forest. An Upwey lawn can be wet by a creek, shaded by forest or steep, and the listing should say which. Give the fall, the hours of sun, and what the trees drop onto the grass, and give the way in: Burwood Highway and Glenfern Road are the main roads, the station sits beside Main Street, and a hillside drive tells a mower whether a ride-on is any use.

Yarra Ranges Shire has no program for mowing nature strips; the single slash it does after confirming a complaint about fire hazard or sightlines is, it says, not mowing. Indigenous plants are what the council prefers on the strip, kept under a metre and not prickly, gravel toppings can replace grass, and artificial turf, sleepers and irrigation are all banned. The three bins are the minimum for any residential collection. FOGO, under a lime-green lid, is collected weekly; the three sizes, 80, 120 and 240 L, cost $143, $157 and $201 respectively for 2026-27; the $136 base charge sits on top.
