Lawn mowing in Blackburn
Blackburn was heavily wooded when Europeans arrived in the 1840s, had a hotel by 1861 and a station by 1882, and still counted only 2,616 people in 1933. Most of its houses went up after the Second World War.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Blackburn lawn
- If your block backs onto the Gardiners Creek parkland, say whether the rear boundary is fenced or open bush. It changes the edging.
- No FOGO bin? Choose clippings taken away when you list. Whitehorse's garden bin is opt-in, and a fortnightly bin fills fast in spring.
- Give the gate width so the right mower turns up. Under 70 cm is push-mower only.
Blackburn lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Blackburn?+
Around $110-$155 for a standard cut for a 180 m² lawn in our model. Your bid is priced off your own block's aerial measurement, and a lot with lawn front and back can come in above the 180 m² figure.
Who mows the nature strip in Blackburn?+
You do, by Whitehorse's own description: residents maintain the strip lawn by regular mowing, weeding and litter pick-up, and the council plants and maintains the street trees. List the strip with the lawn and it is cut on the same visit.
Is a garden bin included in Blackburn?+
No. In Whitehorse the FOGO bin is a supplementary service you opt into: $75.00 a year for 140 L or $99.50 for 240 L in 2026-27, emptied fortnightly. Without one, ask the mower to take the clippings away.
About Blackburn
Orchards and small farms came first, then the 1880s land boom brought brickworks and quarries, a state school in 1889 and, the same year, a dam across the creek that made the lake now kept as Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin painted in the bush around it. The Traveller's Rest Hotel stood on the Blackburn Hotel site from 1861; the post office opened in 1876 and took the Blackburn name in 1883. Growth waited for the post-war years: a high school in 1956, Laburnum primary in 1964. The name is either an early settler's or James Blackburn's, the man who designed the Yan Yean water supply.
Water runs through the middle. Gardiners Creek and its linear parkland - Blacks Walk, Kalang Park, Furness Park - run through the suburb, and Blackburn Creek passes 400 m south of the old township by Morton Park and its oval. The brickworks and quarries of the 1880s are the only word on the ground, and they say nothing about a house lot today. What your own lawn does after a wet week is yours to describe.
City of Whitehorse owns the nature strip and calls it common practice for the resident to mow, weed and pick up litter on it; the council plants the street trees and prunes them. Grass on the strip needs no permit. The garden bin is a different story from the councils further east: Whitehorse's lime-green-lid FOGO bin is opt-in, costs $75.00 or $99.50 a year in 2026-27, and is emptied fortnightly on the week recycling is not. Food scraps have gone in it since July 2022.
