Lawn mowing in Forest Hill

Forest Hill was forest, cleared and farmed by Europeans from the late 1850s, when Scots farmers and woodcutters settled Scotchman's Hill. The name goes back to a cottage a Captain Bunbury occupied in 1841, and only 286 people lived here in 1933.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Forest Hill lawn

  • On Parkmore and Mount Pleasant estate blocks the lawn may wrap around the side of the house; the side gate's width decides what mows it.
  • If the lawn was relaid within the last two summers, say so; it wants a high cut, not a 1950s lawn's short one.
  • Fortnightly opt-in bin or none: choose clippings taken away when you list, and the mower brings the bags.

Forest Hill lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Forest Hill?+

$105-$155 per visit is our model's figure for a 180 m² Forest Hill lawn. Bids come off the outline of your own block, so front-and-back lawns land above it.

Is the nature strip my job in Forest Hill?+

Yes, by Whitehorse's own account. The council owns the strip and the street trees, plants and maintains the trees, and says residents mow, weed and pick up litter on the grass as common practice. Add the strip when you list and the mower takes it in the one go.

How old is a Forest Hill lawn?+

The Mount Pleasant Estate was sold out by 1960 and Parkmore had more than 500 homes by the same year, so most lawns have been cut for sixty-odd years unless a rebuild relaid them. An old lawn takes a lower cut than a new one; a new one wants 60-70 mm for its first two summers, with the mower taking the top third of the leaf and no more.

About Forest Hill

The district went by Scotchman's Hill and Mt Pleasant through the 1860s, with a Wesleyan church in 1865, a post office from 1874 and a state primary school in 1926. Substantial building began in the early 1950s. The Mount Pleasant Estate, the first medium-density subdivision, cut 380 lots around Betula Avenue and Eugenia Street and had sold them all by 1960; Parkmore Estate sales began in 1957 and more than 500 homes stood between Jolimont and Canterbury Roads by 1960. Nunawading High opened in 1955, Blackburn South High in 1960, Parkmore Primary in 1962, Burwood Heights High in 1970. Forest Hill Chase opened in 1964 at Canterbury and Mahoneys Roads and now runs to about 200 shops on three levels.

Both estates, then, went down inside one decade, on land that had been forest and then farms. Rooks Road remembers the settler Abraham Rooks. Parkmore Primary is the one school left inside the boundary, Forest Hill primary having closed in 1993. Nothing written about the place describes the soil or the fall of the ground, and the suburb is 4.1 square kilometres, so the age of the estates is the one thing to go on. Describe the rest yourself: whether the lawn was relaid when the house was, whether it dries out hard in late summer, and where the shade falls.

Forest Hill was City of Nunawading until December 1994 and is City of Whitehorse now. Whitehorse owns the nature strip, plants and prunes the trees on it, and treats it as common practice that the resident mows and weeds the strip and picks up the litter; grass needs no permit, other plantings do. The garden bin is the thing to check. It is opt-in in Whitehorse, a lime-green-lid FOGO bin at $99.50 a year for the 240 L size or $75.00 for the 140 L in 2026-27, and it is collected fortnightly on the week recycling is not.
