Lawn mowing in Blackburn South
Blackburn South was orchards before the 1950s, and Orchard Grove is named for them; some of the original farmhouses still stand. The first subdivisions date from the 1920s, but only 76 people lived here in 1933.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Blackburn South lawn
- On the Wurundjeri Walk side, say if the back lawn runs down to the creek reserve and whether it is fenced.
- A fortnightly 240 L bin fills in one spring cut; have the clippings mulched into the lawn or carted off instead.
- Tell the mower how to reach the back: side gate width, steps, and whether the dog is in.
Blackburn South lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Blackburn South?+
Our model reads $110-$155 per visit for 180 m² of lawn in Blackburn South. Every bid is made against the measured outline of your own block, which is why a big back lawn quotes above the figure.
Who looks after the nature strip in Blackburn South?+
Whitehorse owns it and plants the trees on it, but the grass is yours: the council counts it as common practice for the resident to mow and weed it and keep the litter off. List the strip with the lawn and both are done in the same visit.
Do I need a green bin for the clippings in Blackburn South?+
Not if the mower takes them. Whitehorse's FOGO bin is opt-in, fortnightly and $75.00 or $99.50 a year, so plenty of houses have none. Choose clippings removed when you list, or mulched back in on a short cut.
About Blackburn South
Two arterial roads, Canterbury Road and Burwood Highway, ran east through the district, and that is why the houses went up here before they did in Blackburn North. The late 1950s were the intensive years. The South Blackburn post office opened on Canterbury Road about February 1954, Blackburn East primary in 1958, Warrawong and Blackburn South High in 1960, Mirrabooka and St Luke's in 1962, Eley primary in 1971. Four primaries were folded into Orchard Grove Primary in 1991, and the high school became part of Forest Hill Secondary College, its site now the Aurora School. Population reached 9,730 by 2001 and 10,584 by 2011.
The suburb sits at 107 m, with Canterbury Road on the north dividing it from Blackburn, Middleborough Road on the west and Eley Road on the south. The Wurundjeri Walk Trail follows a creek through it, and Orchard Grove Reserve, Mirrabooka Oval and Eley Park are the open ground, Eley Park with the oval, the tennis courts and the community centre. Nothing written about the old orchards says what soil they grew in, so tell the mower what your own lawn does: whether it dries hard in February or stays soft along the creek side after a wet week. A lawn laid in the late 1950s has been cut for close to seventy years unless someone has relaid it.
The council is City of Whitehorse. It owns the nature strip and expects the resident to keep the grass on it mown, weeded and clear of litter, which it calls common practice; the street trees are planted and pruned by the council. Leaving the strip as grass needs no permit. Whitehorse does not include a garden bin in the rates: the lime-green-lid FOGO bin is a paid extra, $75.00 a year for 140 L or $99.50 for 240 L in 2026-27, collected fortnightly in the week the recycling is not.
