Lawn mowing in Burwood
Burwood began as Ballyshanassy, surveyed in 1858 and renamed Norwood and then Burwood in 1879 after Sir James Palmer's house in Hawthorn West, the name having travelled eastwards along the track. Six hundred people lived here by 1904.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Burwood lawn
- Monash's green bin is weekly and included, Whitehorse's fortnightly and paid for, so the council on the rates notice matters.
- On the creek side, near Gardiners Creek Reserve, mention if the back lawn stays soft after rain.
- Monash counts every tree on the strip as its own; do not ask the mower to prune one, and say if one drops on the lawn.
Burwood lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Burwood?+
For 180 m² of lawn in Burwood our model gives $110-$155 each visit. A mower bids on your own block's outline from the aerial, so the figure is a guide rather than a quote.
Which nature strip rule applies in Burwood?+
Both councils put the mowing on you. Monash owns the strip and expects the owner or occupier to keep it maintained, with overgrown strips reported by photo and followed up by its Horticulture and Community Amenity teams; Whitehorse treats resident mowing of the strip as common practice. Neither cuts it as a matter of course.
Is the Gardiners Creek valley wetter than the rest of Burwood?+
The valley was noted for foggy nights back when the drive-in was there, and the creek runs along both the northern and the southern edges. If your lawn is on the valley floor and stays wet, put it in the listing; wet ground and a mower do not mix.
About Burwood
The Toorak Road tram reached Warrigal Road in 1912 and set the housing going; population was 1,140 in 1911. After the Second World War the streets ran east along Burwood Highway to Bennettswood and beyond, with Bennettswood post office and primary school in 1954, Burwood technical school in 1959 and Wattle Park high school in 1962. Albers' Daffodil Farm of 1934 was sold in 1951 and became Vision Australia's site. The Burwood Skyline drive-in ran from February 1954 to June 1983 in the Gardiners Creek valley, a spot noted at the time for foggy nights. Deakin University's Burwood campus is inside the boundary, and the suburb covers 8.7 square kilometres.
Gardiners Creek is the northern boundary for part of its length and the southern edge for another part, so the valley floor shows up at both ends of the suburb. Wattle Park, 41 hectares, and Gardiners Creek Reserve are the main open ground; Back Creek has mostly been turned into a barrel drain. A block in the valley and a block up on Burwood Highway are different mowing jobs in a wet winter, and the listing is where you say which yours is. Trams 70 on Riversdale Road and 75 on Burwood Highway serve it; Burwood station is over the line in Glen Iris.
Burwood lies across two councils, Monash and Whitehorse, and the two run their bins differently. Monash owns the strip and expects the owner or occupier to keep it maintained; anything planted on it needs a permit and stays under 50 cm, every street tree is the council's, and the green-lid 240 L food and garden bin has gone out weekly since August 2022 inside the rates waste charge. Whitehorse calls resident mowing of the strip common practice too, but its lime-green-lid FOGO bin is opt-in, $75.00 or $99.50 a year in 2026-27, and fortnightly. Your rates notice says which you are.
