About Burwood East
A store stood at Blackburn and Highbury Roads in the 1860s, with the Tally Ho hotel beside it from 1871 until it burnt in October 1888. Flowers and produce went to the Melbourne markets from here into the 1950s. The Methodist Church opened the Tally Ho Boys' Home in 1902, rebuilt it as a village in 1952, and the site later became the Tally Ho Business Park. A mechanics' institute went up in 1925. Housing spread through the 1960s, Burwood Heights primary opened in 1965 and the high school in 1970, the same year Australia's first Kmart opened on Blackburn Road.
The boundaries are four roads: Springvale to the east, Middleborough to the west, Eley and Hawthorn Roads to the north and Highbury Road to the south. Highbury Park keeps a remnant of the native vegetation. A century of orchards is a fact about the district, not about your block; say what your own lawn does.
