Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Hawthorn East lawn

  • If the lawn belongs to a block of flats, say who is booking it and how the mower gets in.
  • A lawn that stays soft for days after rain is cut differently; say so when you list.
  • Down near Gardiners Creek on the southern edge, tell the mower if the back lawn is the low end of the block.

Hawthorn East lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Hawthorn East?+

For a 180 m² lawn our model reads $115-$160 each time in Hawthorn East. The bid is priced on the aerial of your own patch, so a row-house front comes in under the figure and a corner block over it.

Who mows the nature strip in Hawthorn East?+

The resident does. Boroondara's line is that strips get no mowing, watering or spraying from the council and that residents mow the one outside their place. List the strip with the lawn and the two are done together.

Is the ground clay in Hawthorn East?+

Clay is what the Upper Hawthorn Brick Company dug from 1883, and Fritsch Holzer Park and John Gardiner Reserve are their old pits. That is the district, not your block. If your lawn holds water in winter or cracks in February, put it in the listing and the mower plans the cut around it.

About Hawthorn East

Brickmaking left the parks. Augustus Fritsch and the Holzer brothers formed the Upper Hawthorn Brick Company in 1883, and Fritsch Holzer Park sits in their old pit; John Gardiner Reserve was a claypit too. Anderson Park has the sports grounds and a view across to the city. Cato Park and Victoria Road Reserve are smaller. Auburn Primary opened in 1889, Auburn South Primary in 1925, and the Rivoli, art deco, in 1940. Barkers Road, Burke Road, Toorak Road with the Monash Freeway, and Auburn Road are the rough boundary, and Gardiners Creek is the southern limit. Tooronga Village dates from 1965 and The Well from 2008, with about 30 outlets.

Two of the parks are old claypits, so clay is in the district's story, though nobody has written down what lies under any one lawn. By 2011, 57.9 per cent of the dwellings were flats or row houses. A good many lawns here are small: the front of a row house, a shared patch beside a block of flats. Which yours is, whether the booking is for one household or the whole block, and whether the mower comes in from the street or through the building, are the three things a mower reads first. The suburb is 3.8 square kilometres and had 14,321 people in 2016.

Hawthorn East is City of Boroondara. Nature strips get no mowing, watering or spraying from the council, and the expectation is that the resident keeps the strip at the front mown. Lawn clippings, leaves, weeds and branches up to 75 mm go in the lime-green-lid FOGO bin, which has been emptied every week since 4 May 2020 and is paid for through the waste levy on rates. A row house with nowhere to keep a bin can ask for the clippings taken away instead.
