Lawn mowing in Scoresby

Scoresby's ground was swampy at first because its creeks drained poorly toward Carrum Swamp. Once the land was drained the market gardens came, and the first of them was cut into house lots in 1959.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Scoresby lawn

  • The ground here was swampy before it was drained. If the lawn is soft for days after rain, say so; a heavy machine on soft ground leaves ruts.
  • No station, so name the nearest cross street and where a ute can park off Stud Road or Ferntree Gully Road.
  • Weekly green bin: clippings can always go in it, so choose that unless you want mulch left on the lawn.

Scoresby lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Scoresby?+

A 180 m² Scoresby lawn comes out at $100-$145 every mow in our model. A block with grass front and back can be bigger than that, and a bid is priced against the traced area of your lawn, not an average.

Does Knox mow the nature strip in Scoresby?+

No. The council's position is that it puts in and cares for the street trees and that all other landscaping and maintenance costs on the strip are the resident's; it repairs a hazardous path edge but does not restore grass. Add the strip to the job when you list.

Why does my Scoresby lawn stay wet?+

The district's creeks drained poorly toward Carrum Swamp and the ground was swampy before it was drained for market gardens. That is history about the area rather than your block. If yours does hold water, say it in the listing so the mower times the visit.

About Scoresby

The parish was surveyed in 1857 and named after William Scoresby, the Arctic explorer, who visited Victoria the year before. A township grew at the Stud Road and Ferntree Gully Road corner in the 1870s, with a school in 1872 and a Methodist church in 1874. George Knox settled as an orchardist after the First World War, became the local member and was knighted; the City of Knox carries his name. Brussels sprout growers were prominent after the Second World War, and few market gardens were left by the 1990s. Population went from 333 in 1947 to 5,835 in 2001, and the eastern half is the built-up half.

The western half is still open country along Dandenong Creek, and the suburb sits only 80 m above sea level. Swampy ground that drained badly is part of Scoresby's story, which is more than most suburbs can say about what is under them; how your particular block behaves now is not written anywhere, so say if it holds water. No station was ever built here, an 1880s tram plan and a 1980s rail one both came to nothing, and buses and EastLink, finished in 2008, are how a mower arrives. Scoresby Recreation Reserve is the cricket club's ground, the club founded in 1879, and Caribbean Gardens on Caribbean Lake closed in 2020.

The council is Knox. Street trees are planted and kept by the council, and that is where its work on the strip ends: mowing, weeding and every other cost sit with the resident, and worn grass is not restored. A planting on the strip is capped at 500 mm and trees are not permitted. Grass clippings are for the green-lid FOGO bin, weekly since 3 July 2023, rubbish every second week. A first 240 L FOGO bin is inside the 2025-26 waste charge for residents, $434.55; the second is $150.25 a year.
