About Hawthorn
Two kinds of lawn share the postcode. Grace Park and the streets like it have big period gardens: a formal front lawn behind a hedge, a wide nature strip under a plane tree, and a back garden with beds, paths and a lawn kept as part of the design. The single-fronted cottages have a courtyard out the back reached down a path a mower barely fits, and often no front lawn at all. Around Glenferrie and the university, apartments and townhouses have common lawns and small private ones.
Well-drained sedimentary soil, heavy tree cover on the old streets, sun on the river flats: couch on the formal lawns, buffalo and fescue in the shade. The parks on the old quarry sites and the river frontage are the open space. Hawthorn and Glenferrie stations and six tram routes make it a walking suburb, and a mower who parks in a side street and carries the gear is normal.
