Lawn mowing in Wheelers Hill
Wheelers Hill began as a Wheeler family farm near Ferntree Gully Road, and the long rise the road runs along gave the place its name. The post office opened in 1869 as Mulgrave and was renamed Wheelers Hill in 1888.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Wheelers Hill lawn
- The suburb is named for a rise. Say if your lawn follows it; a terraced front or a back yard dropping to the fence is quoted on slope.
- If the block backs onto Jells Park or the creek, say whether the low end of the lawn stays soft after rain.
- Monash empties the green bin weekly, so ask for clippings binned. There is room for a big block's worth every week.
Wheelers Hill lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Wheelers Hill?+
Around $105-$155 for a standard cut for a 180 m² Wheelers Hill lawn in our model. Bids come off your own block's measured area, and if the lawn slopes it is quoted on the trimming along the low edge as well.
Do I have to mow the nature strip in Wheelers Hill?+
Yes. Monash owns the strip and the owner or occupier maintains it; an overgrown strip can be reported to the council with a photo. Add it to your listing and it is done in the same visit. Leave the street tree to the council.
Does the hill change how a lawn is mown?+
Only if your block is on it. The suburb includes one of the highest points in metropolitan Melbourne, at 152 m, but that says nothing about any one street. Tell the mower if the lawn slopes or is terraced, because a slope is trimmer work along the low edge and takes longer.
About Wheelers Hill
An Anglican church went up in 1869 and a Presbyterian one in 1891, and the Wheelers Hill Hotel was post office and rest stop for farmers carting produce to the city. The hill itself was a test: motor-car rallies ran up it in 1905 and motorcycle hill climbs in 1911. It stayed rural through the 1950s, with 252 people in 1947. Houses spread east from Brandon Park shopping centre after 1970, and the schools mark the decade: Good Shepherd Primary 1969, Brandon Park Primary 1971, Wheelers Hill Primary about 1974, Waverley Meadows 1975, Jells Park Primary 1979, then the secondary college and Caulfield Grammar's campus by 1981.
At 152 m above sea level the suburb includes one of the highest points in metropolitan Melbourne, and the rise that named it is still there under the streets. Jells Park runs about 4 km along Dandenong Creek on the eastern boundary, with Jells Lake in it. The suburb is 10.3 square kilometres between the two. Whether a particular lawn sits on the flat or on the slope is not something a map tells a mower, so the listing has to.
The council is City of Monash, which owns the nature strip and expects the owner or occupier to keep it maintained. Overgrown strips can be reported with a photo. Planting on the strip needs a permit, stays under 50 cm and keeps 1.4 m of footpath clear, with no concrete, pavers or rocks. Every street tree is the council's, and residents may not prune. The green-lid 240 L food and garden bin goes out weekly, as it has since August 2022, and the standard bin is in the rates waste charge.
