Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Rye lawn

  • The locality runs from the front beach to the back beach, so the nearest cross street places the block.
  • If the lawn has been left through a whole summer, say so, so the first visit is quoted as the longer job it is.
  • Tea tree spread inland from the foreshore here and drops fine leaf. If it hangs over the lawn, ask for a blow-down before the cut.

Rye lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Rye?+

Rye's figure in our model is $100-$145 a cut for a 180 m² lawn. One that has grown out over a season is a longer first job and may come in above that; from then on the bid follows the measured area of your block.

Do I mow my own nature strip in Rye?+

Yes. Mornington Peninsula Shire's rule is that mowing, edging, weeding and litter on the strip belong to the homeowner or tenant; only the street trees it planted are the Shire's, and a permit is needed before landscaping or removing a tree there. List the strip too and the mower takes it in with the lawn.

What is a Rye lawn growing on?+

Sand over limestone across the peninsula between Sorrento and Dromana, with dunes inland that were sown to pasture after 1910; that is the district, not your block. A sandy lawn drains quickly and dries off in summer, so it holds up better under a higher cut. Say on the listing whether yours goes brown early.

About Rye

Much of the peninsula between Sorrento and Dromana is limestone under sand and recent deposition, and the limestone was quarried throughout the area west of Boneo Road and burnt from the mid-1850s. Local banksia, sheoak and tea tree fed the kilns until the sheoaks had almost disappeared and tea tree spread inland from the foreshore, cut for Melbourne bakers' ovens; the last lime was burnt in 1913 and the last firewood in 1928. A replica kiln stands on the foreshore east of White Cliff, the limestone bluff on the bay. Inland, rabbits turned the sandy dunes from park-like cups into wasteland, and it was sown to pasture behind wire netting after 1910.

The town was proclaimed on 26 February 1861, and its name came from the Rye Hotel of the 1850s, displacing Tootgarook by 1884. The population reached about 3,000 in the 1920s and 30s. During the 1950s and 60s Rye became suburbanised as housing was extended southwards into the peninsula and later reached the back beach; the golf links between Dundas Street and Golf Parade went under houses, replaced by Limestone Valley in 1993. The bay beach has large areas of safe shallow water; the ocean beach is unpatrolled. A lawn on sand over limestone dries fast, so say whether yours does.

Rye is Mornington Peninsula Shire. The nature strip is the homeowner's or tenant's to keep mown, edged, weeded and clear of litter; the Shire tends the street trees it planted and no others, wants a permit before landscaping or tree removal there, and says leaving items on the strip without a hard-waste booking is illegal. Food and green waste go in the 240 L green-lid bin, opt-in at $178 a year in 2025-26, urban area only, collected on the fortnight opposite the recycling, 70 kg limit. Rowley reserve dates from 1922 and the skatepark from 2004.
