Lawn mowing in Yallambie
The Bakewell brothers put together the 245 hectare Yallambie Park farm in 1842 and sold it in 1872 to the pastoralist Thomas Wragge, whose house still stands on Tarcoola Drive. The Commonwealth bought 100 hectares for an army camp in 1943; it opened as Watsonia Army Barracks in 1960 and became Simpson Barracks in 1986.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Yallambie lawn
- Name the estate - Streeton Views, Cascades or the 1970s streets. The turf age differs between them.
- Backing onto the barracks or the river reserve? Say which, and what the fence is like at the bottom.
- The weekly FOGO bin takes a full cut. Only ask for mulching if the lawn is shaded and you want the cover.
Yallambie lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Yallambie?+
Our model puts a 180 m² Yallambie lawn at between $100 and $145 for one cut. A smaller lawn quotes under; a block with a front and back lawn and a strip lands in the band.
Who cuts the nature strip in Yallambie?+
You, or your mower. Banyule's expectation is that the resident keeps the strip in front neat and mown, and the council steps in only for hazards. It can be added to the lawn listing.
What's the difference between a Streeton Views lawn and an older one?+
Age. The 1970s-80s streets have had decades for the soil to settle; Streeton Views was built from the late 1980s and Cascades in the 2000s. Tell the mower which, because a younger lawn is cut higher.
About Yallambie
Houses came late. The camp land doubled in 1951, and the first primary school did not open until 1971, with the surrounding streets built through the 1970s and 80s. The Streeton Views estate went onto reserved land behind the barracks from the late 1980s and 1993, and it nearly doubled the population. The Cascades estate followed in the 2000s. Population was 4,331 in 2001 and 4,129 in 2011.
The suburb runs from Greensborough Road on the west to the Plenty River on the east, between Yallambie Road and Lower Plenty Road, with a linear reserve along the river. Three ages of housing sit inside those 3.1 square kilometres: the 1970s-80s streets, Streeton Views from the late 1980s, and Cascades from the 2000s. A listing that describes the block, its soil and its slope, tells a mower more than the suburb name does.
Banyule expects residents to keep the nature strip in front of their property neat and mown and mows only hazards itself. The FOGO bin takes food and garden waste and goes out weekly, as it has since 4 July 2022. The suburb's name comes from an Aboriginal word, nglambi, meaning to rest or remain.
