Lawn mowing in Coolaroo

The Housing Commission bought the Coolaroo land in 1951 and did not start building until 1966; the first primary school opened the next year. The name is believed to come from an Aboriginal word for brown snake.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Coolaroo lawn

  • The green bin is fortnightly; a spring cut of a lawn left over winter fills a 240 L in one go. Choose clippings taken away if the bin is full.
  • Give a cross street. The suburb's boundary moved in the late 1990s and the Meadow Heights side is across Pascoe Vale Road.
  • The big reserve with the hall and the ovals is council grass; if your block adjoins it, say where your boundary runs.

Coolaroo lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Coolaroo?+

Coolaroo's 180 m² figure in the model comes out at $100-$145 for the visit. A block with grass at both ends of the house can measure above it, and the quote comes from the aerial measurement of your lot.

Does Hume mow the nature strip in Coolaroo?+

No. Hume's policy has the resident or owner mowing, edging, weeding and clearing litter on the strip along each side of the property. Council's works are to make a strip safe, putting back soil, not turf; it plants and removes the trees itself. List the strip too and the same visit covers it.

How do I get a lawn back after it has gone to seed?+

Over two or three visits. A mower takes off no more than a third each time rather than scalping it in one go, and the first visit is priced as a first cut, not a regular mow. Photograph the length at listing time so the bid is right first time.

About Coolaroo

Building began in 1966 and the first primary school opened in 1967, then a brewery in 1968, and Greer Industries moved out from Richmond in 1979. A later state primary became St Mary's Coptic Orthodox College. Until the late 1990s the suburb reached past the railway and Pascoe Vale Road into what is now Meadow Heights. Coolaroo station on the Craigieburn line opened on 6 June 2010, almost 40 years after a station was first planned; Upfield station sits on Barry Road at the border with Campbellfield, and four bus routes run through. No shopping centre sits inside the suburb; shops are in Dallas, at Meadow Heights or in Broadmeadows.

The Commission held the land for fifteen years before it built, and the houses date from 1966 on. Pascoe Vale Road is the western boundary, the Roxburgh Park hotel marks the northern one and a hotel-motel on Barry Road the southern. There is a large reserve with a community hall and ovals. Say when the lawn was last cut and how far it has got away.

Nature strips in Hume are the resident's on all sides of the property, by the Residential Nature Strip Policy re-adopted in March 2024: mowing, edging, weeding and litter pick-up, regularly. The council makes a strip safe when it has to and reinstates soil only; street trees are planted and removed by council and by nobody else. No grass height is written into the policy. The food and garden bin, bright green lid, went to every household from 1 July 2024 inside the standard waste charge, emptied fortnightly, sized 140 L or 240 L.
