About Westmeadows
The post office opened on 1 January 1855; the District Roads Board building, police station and shire office all date from 1866 and St Anne's Catholic church from 1867. Broadmeadows outgrew the old village once the station opened, and civic offices went up by the railway in 1928. The Housing Commission started its 2,226 ha Broadmeadows estate in 1949. The post office was renamed Broadmeadows West in 1955 and Westmeadows in 1963. Westmeadows Heights, over 900 houses near the old township, was built between 1975 and 1979, and the 2012 Valley Park redevelopment put new housing and aged care on two former school sites.
Mickleham Road runs through the middle. Yuroke Creek is the eastern boundary and Moonee Ponds Creek the northern one, and Broadmeadows Valley Park carries two streams down into Moonee Ponds Creek under the airport flight path. A house in the old township and a house in Westmeadows Heights are 125 years apart.
Hume City Council's Residential Nature Strip Policy, POL/194, puts the strip's regular mowing, edging, weeding and litter on the resident, on every side of a corner block, and council does works only to make safe. Council plants over 5,000 street trees a year and takes one out only if it is unsound or declining. Food and garden waste goes in the bright-green-lid bin every second week, alternating with recycling, 140 L or 240 L, included in the standard waste charge since 1 July 2024.
