Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Dallas lawn

  • Corner block? Hume's policy covers the strip on every side, so list both frontages.
  • A Commission-era side gate of 70-95 cm takes the standard mower; under 70 cm means push-mower only.
  • A lawn that got away over winter comes down in two visits, a third of the leaf each time.

Dallas lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Dallas?+

A 180 m² Dallas lawn works out to $100-$145 by the model's reading, one visit. The mower bids off your block's aerial reading, and a corner lot with strips on two sides comes in above that.

Who mows the nature strip in Dallas?+

The resident or owner, for every frontage, under Hume's strip policy: mowing on a regular basis, edging, weeding and litter. Council's part is making a hazard safe, and it reinstates soil, not turf. The policy has no grass-height number in it.

What if my back fence is the creek park?+

Then say so. A block on the Merlynston Creek linear park has an outside edge to trim and may get leaf and litter blown in from the reserve, and low ground by a creek can stay soft after rain. The mower plans the visit around that.

About Dallas

The MMBW built a district reservoir here in 1924 to reticulate water to Broadmeadows, and the shopping centre sits near it. Broadmeadows technical school opened near the reservoir in 1962. Dallas primary opened in 1963 and got a new building in 2012, Dallas North primary followed in 1965, a Catholic primary sits on Barry Road, and Hume Central Secondary, Dallas Brooks Community Primary, Ilim College and Sirius College have campuses here. The Commission houses went up in the one decade, 1961 to 1970, and their lawns with them.

Merlynston Creek runs through the eastern part with a linear park along it. Railways make two boundaries, the Upfield line on the east and the Craigieburn line on the west, with Coolaroo and Broadmeadows the nearest stations and Upfield on the other line; Barry Road closes the north and a run of streets from Riggall Street to Geach Street the south. Buses 532 and 540 run through. A block on the creek park side may have grass beyond the fence; say what the rear boundary is and whether the lawn holds water.

Hume's Residential Nature Strip Policy leaves the strip on every side of the block to the resident or owner: mow it regularly, edge it, weed it, pick up the litter. Council's own work on a strip is limited to making it safe, and it puts back soil rather than turf. The street trees it plants and removes itself. The policy has no grass-height figure; the 400 mm cap in the landscaping guidelines is for planted vegetation and sight lines. The food and garden bin, green lid, 140 L or 240 L, is fortnightly, and since 1 July 2024 every household has paid for it inside the standard waste charge.
